February is Black History Month, and Skyland’s All Are Welcome Social Justice Action Group has some great learning and experiential opportunities planned for us all! Each year since 1928, the Association for the Study of African American Life and History (ASALH) has chosen a theme for the year. (You will learn more about this, and the founder of Black History Month/ Carter G. Woodson in Week One). The theme for 2025 is African Americans and Labor. This theme highlights the profoundly influential — yet often disregarded or disrespected — labor (both chosen and forced) that Black people have contributed to our country. We will explore Black labor across time, cultural events, and industries – from enslaved labor to organized labor movements fighting for social and economic justice. Black workers have been integral to the nation’s development while facing systemic challenges and discrimination. We will use the bulletin board in the colonnade (and other communication tools) to explore the history of labor unions and the Civil Rights Movement, Black women’s labor, and the role of Black labor in building Asheville’s infrastructure and community.
