Bridges Skyland UMC Reading Enrichment Program
Skyland UMC has a reading enrichment program on our campus on Mondays and Wednesdays from 2:45 – 5:30 p.m. We serve 11 rising 1st graders from Estes Elementary School, targeting children with literacy skill delays. While our focus is on improving literacy skills, we also address children’s physical, psychological and spiritual development through enrichment programs, movement experiences and weekly chapel time.

Faith in Action Days
Several times during the year, our church family comes together to serve in the community. These dates and times vary according to the needs of those we serve. Examples of past Faith-In-Action Days have included working at Haywood Street Congregation, building houses for Habitat for Humanity and assembling cleaning buckets for victims of natural disasters (as part of United Methodist Committee on Relief — UMCOR). Future Faith-in-Action Days will be announced on our church calendar.

Welcome Table
The Welcome Table at Skyland provides a free breakfast on Saturday mornings to support and promote community. The ministry began in the fall of 2013 through the efforts of four area churches. Breakfast is served each Saturday from 9:30 am to 11:00 am by volunteers from partner churches. Everyone from the community is welcome to come enjoy a hearty meal and the opportunity to visit with others around the table.

Room In The Inn
Provides shelter for twelve women at a time who, for a variety of reasons, can’t stay at a shelter. Our church is one of many faith communities who take turns hosting the women for a week, providing all of their meals, shelter, and evening activities. This gives women who aren’t a good fit for a shelter environment a safe place to sleep each night while waiting to get into permanent housing.

Estes Elementary School Reading Buddies and Mentors
Through part of our connection to our state wide Congregations for Children United Methodist initiative, our church partners with our local elementary school, with a poverty rate of 54%. Our church supports the school in working with these children in need through collecting items and volunteering in the Estes Resource Center, mentoring children and serving as a 1-on-1 Reading Buddy to a child.
