Pastor Dan Hester is the Senior Pastor at SUMC.  His responsibilities include…..everything! The unofficial answer is that he’s called to assist other people to discover and answer their calling from God. And yes, everyone has a calling from God!

He is a native North Carolinian. He was born and raised in Greensboro and lived there until he went to college at UNC-Chapel Hill.  After UNC, he attended Duke Divinity School and moved around as a Methodist Minister to Charlotte, Concord, Lexington, Harrisburg, then back to Charlotte.

Pastor Dan and his wife Julie are fairly new empty nesters.  Their son, Hank, just graduated from UNC and is moving to Seattle in August 2019 to start his first job. Their daughter, Lucy, will start her second year at Appalachian State in August 2019. His mother still lives in Greensboro, and Julie’s parents still live in her hometown of Jacksonville, FL.

In regards to hobbies outside of work….he’s a proud member of the Hobby of the Month Club! Most recently he’s been a photo bug. But, he’s always enjoyed hiking and is really looking forward to doing more of that here. Ask him again in a year and he might have a different answer! He’s also been very fortunate to have the opportunity to travel. Last summer his family was able to go to France and Spain.

His current favorite quote:

He has quotes that stay in his head for a season, then leave and make room for new ones. The most recent quote that lingers with him is from writer E. B. White: I arise in the morning torn between a desire to improve the world and a desire to enjoy the world. This makes it hard to plan the day.
